Everton deadline thread: Gunners in for Arteta, striker set to sign, fee agreed for Beckford, Yak also set to leave
Arsenal are rumoured to have made a £10million bid for Mikel Arteta while striker Denis Stracqualuisi is due at Finch Farm for a medical ahead of a loan deal from Tigre.
More after the jump
Sky Sports is reporting that Yakubu has left Everton’s training ground, apparently destined for Blackburn, who he rejected just 24 hours earlier.
Joseph Yobo though could be staying at Goodison. With Fenerbahce dealing with their match-fixing crisis it Moyes had admitted the Nigerian defender would be welcomed and re-integrated into the squad – just like a new signing!
Other loan deals include the temporary departures of Shane Duffy and Jose Baxter, which I
believe would be beneficial for both players as they look to continue their development.
**Update* * Shane Duffy has joned Scunthorpe on loan.
Will any of those deals free up funds for a loan signing? I doubt it, even if the Yak’s £40,000+ wages are lifted from the wage bill it appears funds are so tight no-one is allowed to come in.
And would the bank let us spend the majority of the £5million for Beckford or £10million for Arteta? Probably not, so there would be no point in selling them.
However, with Moyes admitting every player has his price, it could be a nervous few hours as we wait and see whether his squad will be reduced still further.
The likes of Arteta, Phil Jagielka, Marouane Fellaini, have all been linked with big money moves away and if that happened, it could prove disasterous to our season as we would have little time to replace them.

Wow - didn't see this coming
Strikers if everything goes through are -
Saha, Vellios, Cahill (it’s how Moyes lines him up) and Stracqualursi
Will they play 3 of them at one time?
by Phillyfootballfan on Aug 31, 2011 4:44 PM BST reply actions
Roysten Drenthe on loan is another name mentioned
Would perhaps give us some pace on the wings, another player who has lost his way that Moyes could get the most out of.
Sign me up for that sale
10 million for Arteta is a good price, ideally go a little higher, but we can afford to take the hit assuming no one is brought in to replace him

I'm not sure...
If he can bring in a decent £5million replacement, with the rest going to the bank, then that might be ok. It would look really bad if we sold our main creative player for £10million without bringing anyone in permanently
Arteta hasn't been much of a creative force over the last year
Osman, Cahill, Billy, Barkley, Rodwell, Fellaini, Coleman, Heitinga, Neville, Anichebe (ugh!) can all play in the midfield if Arteta leaves, and Osman ended up doing most of the creating last year, especially in the spring
Now it appears that the Drenthe deal is dependant on Arteta leaving...
Urgh, I hate supporting Everton at the moment…..
Take the 10 Moyes!
It's a grand old team to play for, it's a grand old team to support!
12 would be reasonable, I think
He hasn’t been the same for a while, and I’m not sure he’s worth 15 anymore.
It just sucks that we have to do deals this late
Cause we can’t spend it in time which means it’ll go straight to the bank.
@sibsInExile
Absolutely
Everton can’t really line up deals, since they can’t spend money they take in. In general, the moves will be sales for loans, if I had to guess.
So what actually happened? Do we know for sure yet?
If we can keep Arteta and still get Drenthe, I'll take that
We need a winger, ut it shouldn’t be at the expense of our creative midfielder. It’s fascinating to see all the differing opinions on Mikel though, plenty willing to let him go.
Bendtner looks like he is going to Sunderland on season long loan
which means cash plus player deal for Arteta is done. I think Arteta to Arsenal is pretty much completely dead
@sibsInExile
A week ago I would have been willing to let Arteta for for 12
But this late with the deadline approaching we wouldn’t have time to spend it on another player. Hope to see him stay at this point.

Fox Soccer reporting Beckford signed with Leicester
It's a grand old team to play for, it's a grand old team to support!
Yea
don’t know what to think of that. This probably means we have the cash to get Drenthe on loan. But that doesn’t change the fact that we lost a striker…
@sibsInExile
Fee around 4.5 mil GBP
Seems good since we got the lad a year ago on a free… Down to just Saha, Yak (maybe), Anichebe, and Vellios…
It's a grand old team to play for, it's a grand old team to support!
We'll have to wait and see what happens in the rest of the deadline
If we lose Yak and don’t gain any striker, then i hate that move. If we get someone, then it’s a great move cause we pretty much sold him for the most I think we can get for him ever.
@sibsInExile
Just saw that - it is not looking good.
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
Arteta now actually trending on Twitter...too much chatter for something not to happen.
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
I'll cry
The way the make are deals are asinine. It doesn’t even make sense if it makes business sense if you pin yourself against the wall
@sibsInExile
Not even sure if it makes any business sense..
Put 10m in the bank today and lose that and more if the team is not competitive. If it results in relegation, the bank never gets their money.
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
If this had happened in July I would understand
But an hour before the deadline? This is crazy!! Who are we going to get in now?!
This is why I hate how our club is run
If you have a deep squad, you can do this kind of stuff. We’re already stretched thin. If he leave, and with Yak and Beckford gone, we better hope for no injuries, or it’ll be one hell of a long year.
@sibsInExile
Even Saha is getting in on the discussion...
…new day and age when players learn about their teammates transfer status through Twitter.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah. What is going on???

for now just put Arteta or #deadlineday in search and you will get plenty of information
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
I was actually going to do a story on this, since Twitter has become so influential...
I just do all the players, obviously everyone on this site and rbmersey and some others like @toffeeweb and a couple of sports writers/news sites (bbcsport etc.)
@sibsInExile
don't know why the formatting is weird?
this is the cuttoff part… I just do all the players, obviously everyone on this site and
@sibsInExile
Sibi, do you have a Twitter list of the players created that can be followed?
I had created a list, but it only has nine from the team. Are there more players on Twitter?
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
I'll create one
there’s actually not that many first teamers. It’s like Cahill, saha, distin, neville, and barkley. But there are a lot of reserves or youngsters guys that have been joining.
@sibsInExile
also Heitinga and Coleman
but Heitinga doesn’t post much and seems very rare that it is in English.
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
haha and Rodwell and Bily
I forgot a lot of people. Just noticed all them while making this list.
@sibsInExile
Here's the list...It's all the players I am following as of now. There may be some I'm not following but I'll keep adding

A Mikel Arteta story on the official site has been removed..
Looks like he is off, an hour before the deadline, ffs

Yakubu, Beckford gone
Possibly Arteta as well. We get this Dennis guy for 1.9 million, Frente is on a free transfer a la Craig Bellamy

By the way, Yakubu can die in a fire
He could have made this move much earlier, but according to sources, he’s the one that turned it down. Now he leaves on deadline day.
Here’s what he said on Blackburn:

Drenthe or that Argentinian fella?

I don't think we've commented on anything yet
But Yak and Beckord leaving seem to be sure things. I won’t believe us signing anyone until I see the official statement.
Alright, I’m off to bed. Gotta wake up in 2 hours at 5:30am for work :(

Yakubu
Yakubu was a deadline day signing for Blackburn Rovers on 31st August, 2011. Earlier in the transfer window a deal had looked likely, however broke down due to the two parties failing to agree to personal terms. However, after a last minute plea to his chairman Rovers manager Keene was able to offer the Nigerian striker the McDonalds gift card and shorts with adjustable waistline that had previously proved the stumbling block. Sources close to Yakubu said that he felt that he had eaten all the food at Finch Farm and was looking forward to the new challenges posed to him by the canteen staff at Ewood Park.

Sad to see Arteta go
He’s probably be one of my favorite Everton players since I’ve been a fan of the club. But to be fair, he’s nowhere near the player he was before the injury and 10 million is probably a decent haul. Now if we could just get some funds for the club!
Neville sums it up

Window closed I’m shattered see you all tomorrow
So frustrating. Moyes has quite the job ahead of him to keep players from being deflated.
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
Agreed, but he must be feeling low to, he has a massive job on to try and lift the players.
Gutted about Mikel, he was one of my favourite players too, and only a week or so ago he was on the BBC saying how much he loved Everton. Sadly the banks appeared to have got their way, but the last team to do that was Pompey and before that Leeds – look where they are now….

Won't make up or the loss of Arteta though,
Get the impression the supporters are feeling mutinous, think the club will be relieved that there is a week until the next match, people may have calmed down by then,
or perhaps not….
Strikers
I’m not thrilled about losing Beckford; He was one of my favorite players last season, like a poor man’s Berba, but more likable. Hopefully this means Moyes has more confidence in Vellios and Baxter stepping in and making a contribution.
HOWEVER we’ll probably just see an endless amount of Big Vic falling down while Jose and Apostolos warm the pine.

Summary
Arteta
Terribly disappointing to lose such a creative force – albeit one whose star was waning. Great that we got £10-12M for him and cut £4M from the wage bill.
Yakubu
Wasting away – we got a cheap deal but money in the bank at least.
In
Denis S…
Seems to know where the net is – so that’s a real bonus
Royston
A bit of an oddball apparently – unpaid for 6 months at Tigre, a Real (Madrid) failure. Could be a real bonus – that 15 minutes between losing Mikel and getting these 2 in was a real downer.
Duffy on loan – not bad.
Beckford – if we got £4M for him that’s great news.
Barclays Bank will be beside themselves that we’ve netted around £15M in financial profit (and £18M in cash) – plus, if Royston is permanent (on a free with some sell-on rights going to Real) that’s fantastic business. So, onwards and upwards Blues – tomorrow is another day, we’ve addressed the problems left midfield and up front, hopefully. COYB
Toffee Dan
Other people have “failed” at Real Madrid and managed to make something of themselves elsewhere. And I’m writing that as someone who loathes both Real Madrid and Feyenoord – because I’d rather look on the bright side?
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
You could argue that the Arteta deal was indicative of desperation I suppose – Everton’s desperation for cash, Arsenal’s desperation to find someone who isn’t allergic to scoring goals, and Arteta’s desperation to play Champion’s League football while he still can.
It’s not an especially edifying sight but at least it’s all understandable.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
If we had sold Arteta ealier I would have been fine with it
Don’t get me wrong, I loved him. But my thinking was, the money we could get for him and his wage being off the books would be worth it. The reason why I am angry/frustrated now, is that we did this last minute and didn’t really bring in anyone.
Remember, we lost two FIRST TEAMERS. WE brought in two guys, one could definitely become a first teamer (Royston) and one has never played in a top league before. So in other words, our thin squad has become even thinner. Now we have to HOPE that these players fit in and become regulars/live up to their expectations.
The fact is, we got weaker and we have to get lucky. We can still perform great, but now we have to pray for no injuries. Cause believe me, if a couple of guys get injured (and they always do), we are up shits creek.
@sibsInExile
The timing wasn’t brilliant, but given a choice between watching Arteta leave or have another “want-away, don’t give a shit” episode in the fashion of Joleon Lescott, I’m okay with watching Arteta leave.
As for the replacements, Everton doesn’t have the money to buy “guaranteed” performers – and even so-called locks don’t always work out. Juan Sebastian Veron and Zlatan Ibrahimovic come to mind. They’ve done a decent job scouting before, the loans are worth a punt.
But then I’m just looking for a non-relegation season, my supporter ambitions are limited.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
After a night's sleep I feel a little better about the deadline outcome.
that 15 minutes between losing Mikel and getting these 2 in was a real downer.
It was good to see we at least got someone coming in and I trust Moyes would have pushed to bring guys that he thought would fit with squad.
Once Arteta made it clear he would like to leave, Everton had to make the deal go through. Would have been too much of a distraction if Arteta came back to the team. I don’t fault him for wanting to move on, Everton is fragile enough that they can not afford any other sideshow circus.
The lack of depth is concerning, but if either one of the newcomers turns into a surprise performer, given the financial state of the team, Everton could come out ahead.
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
We have to replace a squad player and a starter
We got immediate replacements for Arteta and Beckford who are younger and cheaper.. Plus once Coleman returns things will be better.
Our debt was 45 million right? If so 10 for Arteta, 4 for Beckford, plus Yakubu puts a good dent in the debt. We could have had to sell Baines, Jags, or Rodwell if the bank forced it. Now we have some breathing room
Jonathan Wilson on Traca
In a league where attacking football is usually dominated by fluttering will-o-the-wisps, it was refreshing to see a striker earning his keep by relying on brute physicality, with just a touch of intricacy as an afterthought. If previously ‘Traca’ was an attractive prospective signing for the Primera’s bigger clubs or European observers, Round 10 of the Clausura was when he well and truly arrived. He became the first player in 15 years to score a hat-trick against Boca Juniors in the Bombonera.
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
He's exactly what we need
We have no pwer guys after Yakubu went soft and Anichebe turned into a little girl. But he’ll still be a work in progress for the Prem League unless we get lucky and he develops fast
@sibsInExile
there are no guarantees, obviously
But if Everton’s had their eye on him for a while, I’m inclined to think they’ve got some notion he could make the switch. It’s not like he’s dropping into a team with complete no-hopers all around. If he fits with the team and he finds himself at home with the style of play, it could go well.
And really, even if he doesn’t score anything, it’s not like it’s a huge net loss relative to Yakubu…
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Yea but we also lost Beckford
What really scares me: We have one striker that we know can perform at a Premier League level. And he’s made of glass.
@sibsInExile
So basically we are right back to where we were last year in August
