Landon Donovan is doomed to fail in his second stint on loan for Everton. The problem is there is nothing he or any player can do about it. News of Donovan's return seemed to shake the very foundation of Twitter with thousands of Toffees tweeting their excitement. The simple news of a player arrival, albeit a very talented player, would make impartial observers think the club had managed to win the Champions League, not take a talented 29 year old midfielder on loan.

One of the biggest reasons Donovan will not be successful is because of how well the team played during his time at Goodison in 2010. The start of the new year brought a fantastic run of form for the Toffees that allowed them to salvage what had been a disappointing season up until then. Although the team is largely the same minus Mikel Arteta and Stephen Piennar, there is no guarantee this form will be replicated even if Donovan plays up to the same level as he did in 2010. All eleven players will need to play fantastic football, and this is highly unlikely given the teams performance so far this year.

Another obstacle to Donovan's success is how beloved he is by the fans. Landon's final image at Goodison consisted of a lap around the field along with the chants of USA ringing around the pitch. It is hard to improve on that, and it may not matter how well he plays if the team doesn't perform. As an icon he will be held to a higher standard and the team's success will define him, just as their lack of it will define him for the worse. Reading some of the comments on Twitter it appears that Donovan is literally the messiah for Everton, and that can not be a good thing.

Now all of this is not to say Donovan will struggle in the Premiership, he still has his pace as well as a knack for the big moment, but Everton is unlikely to enjoy such a perfect run of form, and his reputation will suffer. The important thing for fans to remember is the need to temper expectations. Donovan will certainly help Everton, but he is not a 20 goals a year striker and is not the solution to all that ails the club. Fans would do well to remember this when judging Donovan's second spell on Merseyside
